Credit Counseling
Credit Counseling is a process of educating consumers about how to use credit appropriately, so as they can avoid running into debts that cannot be repaid. Many credit counselling services will also negotiate with creditors to help their clients set up payment plans or to reduce the total balances that they owe.
Credit Counseling is a requirement that must be met by consumer debtors that are filing for bankruptcy in the United States as established by the Bankruptcy bad behavior e Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. In order to meet this requirement, during the 180-day period before the filing of bankruptcy, the consumer in debt must complete a program with an approved nonprofit budget and credit counseling agency. A program like this might include, but is not limited to, one conducted by the phone or over the internet, making it easier on the debtor as they don't have to show up in person. This also keeps it a litle bit more personal.
