Briefcase
A briefcase is a narrow, box-shaped bag usually made of leather or metal. A briefcase is typically associated with lawyers for carrying trial documents, but most businessmen own a briefcase. Although a briefcase is usually used for carrying important documents and papers, many people use their briefcase to bring their lunches and other assorted items to and from work as a briefcase usually has a fair amount of space inside and protects its contents well.
The word briefcase came into existence because lawyers used to use this style of bag to bring "briefs" to court. A brief is a legal argument presented to a court explaining why a party to a case should win. There are several other styles of briefs used in court, but all of them fit nicely in a good briefcase.
A metal briefcase is often used in transporting dangerous or fragile goods as it is easy to carry, quite secure and very tough. For example, often on TV shows one will see dangerous goods transported in a silver steel briefcase with a secure locking system.

Briefcases are descendants of the limp satchel used in the fourteenth
century for carrying money and valuables. It was called a \"budget\",
derived from the Latin word \"bulga\" or Irish word \"bolg\",
both meaning leather bag, and also the source of the financial term \"budget\".
Godillot of Paris was the first to use a hinged iron frame on a carpet
bag, in 1826. There then followed the Gladstone bag and the Rosebery,
an oval-top bag. Eventually these became the recent metal-framed briefcase.
The first of what is known as the recent rectangular briefcase is said
to have been invented by Jeremy Stenning in the late 1850s.
Types of briefcases
* A portfolio is a handleless housing for carrying in the hand or under
the arm.
* A folio housing is a portfolio with a retractable handle.
* An attaché housing is a box-style housing made of leather (occasionally
aluminium), extended over a hinged frame that opens into two compartments.
It was traditionally carried by an attaché, a diplomatic officer
attached to an embassy or consulate officially assigned to serve in a
particular capacity (e.g., cultural attaché; military attaché).
